The ABC crisis model is crucial to crisis intervention because it provides a foundation of support, comfort, and a problem-solving approach (Kanel, 2019). I believe all steps of the ABC crisis model is important but step A seems to be the most important of all. Step A provides a resource to the client via relationship. Relationships are vital in a crisis because the client or student is in a vulnerable state (Kanel, 2019). Crisis interventions differ with the complexity of the situation, and regardless of the approach, an appropriate relationship is crucial to any solution (Pfeifer, 2021).One purpose mentioned in the textbook is that using basic attending skills allows you to gain understanding of the experience the person is dealing with (Kanel, 2019).

Step B allows for the counselor to focus on the current situation by identifying the problem and interviewing the client (Kanel, 2019). According to Kanel (2019), “the interview process is similar to climbing a tree” (pg.49). I could see how the interview process is described as climbing a tree because it takes work to get there. I always remind my students in any situation you have to work to get the results you want. Step C is the last step of the ABC crisis model and it involves the client coping with the crisis (Kanel, 2019). Coping skills that are helpful in a crisis situation are relaxation techniques, physical activity, and calming activities (Pfeifer, 2021). Coping skills can be modified for any age by changing how you describe it. When I worked as an elementary counselor, I would use the book Breathe Like a Bear. This helped the children understand how to breathe and how long to breathe for. I am linking a picture of this book to the bottom of the discussion for anyone interested in it!

The ABC model of crisis intervention is an important concept when dealing with crisis for multiple reasons. The ABC model is simple, brief, and effective for clinicians to use in crises (Kanel, 2018). According to Roberts (2000), “crisis intervention is the most widely used form of brief treatment used by behavioral clinicians, counselors, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals worldwide”. The prevalence of crisis intervention makes having simple and effective guidelines for crisis intervention more important. The ABC model breaks crisis management down into three phases: rapport building, identifying the problem, and coping effectively (Kanel, 2018). This model is applicable to different populations and is flexible, which are both needed when dealing with crises (Kanel, 2018).

The three steps of the ABC model are easily interchangeable, meaning depending on the client or situation, the clinician can determine which step should be used first. For example, if the crisis is immediate the clinician may choose to dive straight into identifying the issue or coping before they build rapport. Clinicians may also build rapport as they are going through the other two steps. This method is multiculturally acceptable as long as the counselor is multiculturally competent due to its simplicity, flexibility, and focus on the client’s perceptions of the crisis.
