Hardy’s Conceptualization

Hardy starts chapter 3 with a series of soul searching questions to help figure out work and the type of vocation it might hold for an individual. Hardy believes there are different ways to work with meaning, whether it’s serving God in the workforce or serving God at a church. St. Paul  refers to serving in a Christian setting like a church as “Gifts” of the spirit (Hardy, 1990. Pg 81). Without meaning and a calling work at some point becomes worthless (Keller, 2012. Pg 98). Flexible jobs design was something that stood out to me. Flexible work is the ability for an employee to perform their job task in a designed setting for time and location (Valentine, 2020. Pg 126). Companies that have flexibility can give meaning and a piece of mind. Having flexibility gives employers the option to give all employees some much needed time off, so they can have  balance. Employers that can connect with employees are companies that work well in team projects. Using teams in job design is a popular way to build morale and culture. From personal experience in running a department, we created tiger teams that would help improve our top problem, whether it be customer satisfaction or increasing memberships. “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others “(Holy Bible.King James Version, 2016. Philippians 2:3-4). Employees working on a team, and as a team help an organization reach its goals (Cattermole, 2021. Pg 180). This allows continuous skill improvement and a peak in productivity.

HR Practice Implications

Recruiting is very important for a company, finding the right talent can be frustrating and costly. A company can lose money on having too much labor and lose money by not fulfilling a much needed position. Strategic recruiting is finding the right employee that aligns with the executive and financial goals for the company. Outsourcing the recruiting aligns with the strategic goals of a company, but is not good for hands-on HR duties (Valentine, 2020. Pg 186). The executive team would hire an employee that they can build a relationship of high trust by providing the employee with a feeling of control over their job (Smith, 2021. Pg 21). The people element is often eliminated and the task becomes as efficient as you can be. Reducing labor and keeping costs down becomes the priority. Technology for recruiting has helped HR to find more qualified candidates that align with the company goals. The automation recruiting has grown to a point where the system only needs one or two minutes to complete an application process to get the right candidates in the door for an actual interview.
