Culture has more of an influence than most people think.

Marie Indenhoek
Culture has more of an influence than most people think. It can be very influential in communities, setting standards for mannerisms and lifestyles. Within in each culture is such a big community ranging from all over the world. Cultural awareness is important to consider with each client. In the counseling process, it is important for the counselor to be aware of the services provided to give the best help possible while being aware of traditions that could hinder some practices. It can be beneficial because not only are both individuals building a relationship to strengthen between them, but it can open up both to other ideas that can open new dialogue. It can be damaging for the counselor to not be open to understanding other perspectives. If the counselor isn’t open, then it can seem closed off from the client to build the relationship between the two. Some ways to help would be doing research into the client’s culture to understand the background of them. With the understanding, it can provide better help to giving help in situations with limitations in some cultures. It is with great hope and understanding that as counselors we follow the Code of Ethics and have complete openness and understanding of the clients and their background. If this cannot stand, then the counselors could be set up for failure.
