Work Breakdown Structure

Use the following project scope statement to create a WBS for the Riordan Manufacturing Go Green campaign.

Riordan Manufacturing is a plastics injection molding manufacturer pursuing a Go Green project with the intent of achieving International Organization for Standardizations 14001 certification. Riordan’s main objective is to improve the sustainability of its products and processes. A separate but related component of this campaign is to improve sustainable practices in offices at each plant. Offices are being asked to support this effort by developing green programs, such as generating lower waste, improving energy efficiency, and carpooling.

Scope

  • Restricted to offices at Riordan locations
  • Does not include external activities
  • Restricted to lowering office waste, improving energy efficiency or lowering energy usage, and reducing air pollutants

Deliverables

  • Reduce solid office waste volume by 50%.
  • Lower energy consumption by 10%.
  • Increase carpooling to over 50% of the staff.
  • Reduce disposable break room products by 75%.
  1. Create the WBS in Microsoft® Project. Use the decomposition technique to identify deliverables, sub-deliverables, and tasks that must be completed. When necessary, break these deliverables into smaller packages. Link the tasks with predecessors in Microsoft Project.  (Linking: In a project, establishing a dependency between tasks to show relationships between them).
  2. For each deliverable, include a justification of no more than 150 words (submit as part of the report) in which you explain why it must be completed in the manner and order you chose.
  3. Create a WBS dictionary.
  4. Write a paper of 800  words in which you describe the role of a project leader in creating a WBS. Explain strategies a project leader would use to interpret the project scope statement, conduct relevant research, and develop the WBS.
  5. Combine the Microsoft Project WBS, deliverable justification, WBS dictionary, paper, and a one page executive summary into one cohesive report.
  6. Format your report consistent with APA guidelines.
  7. Click the Assignment Files tab to submit your assignment. Also submit a copy of the Microsoft Project file.

………Answer Preview……….A work breakdown structure is a deliverable oriented decomposition of a project into smaller fractions. It provides the necessary framework for cost estimating and control. It is a hierarchical and incremental decomposition of a project into phases, deliverables and work packages and a subdivision of the effort required to achieve an objective. It starts with the end objective and consequently breaking it down into manageable components in terms of size, duration and responsibility. In Riordan Manufacturing the main objective is to improve the sustainability of its manufactured products and processes and offices are being asked to support this initiative by developing low waste generating programs…………………….
