Charles Horton Cooley was the first theorist to discuss the social origins of the self. Cooley developed the idea of the looking-glass self. The looking-glass self means we acquire our sense of self by seeing ourselves reflected in other people\’s attitudes and behavior toward us and imagining what another person thinks of us. According to Cooley, there are three parts to this idea:
1. What we imagine others see in us
2. How we imagine others judge what they see
3. How we feel about these judgments
