TEXTBOOK : MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING with Adolescents and Young Adults.

LEARNING ACTIVITY #2: SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSION

Read Chapter 3 in your textbook by Naar-King & Suarez.

Prepare to share in discussion the following points.

Summarize in your words each of the three themes: autonomy, collaboration, and evocation.

Reflect upon how each of these three themes is especially important when forming a therapeutic alliance with adolescents and young adults.

OBJECTIVE 2: REFLECT UPON THE CONTEXTUAL APPROPRIATENESS OF REFLECTIONS AND AFFIRMATIONS.

As noted in Chapter 3, motivational interviewing is based upon autonomy, collaboration, and evocation. Active listening skills are necessary to facilitate those themes. Open-ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries (OARS) are the primary strategies used during active listening. An important skill to develop is understanding how and when to implement each strategy.

LEARNING ACTIVITY #3: FOUR STRATEGIES RESPONSE

Read Chapter 3 in your textbook by Naar-King & Suarez.

Write a 1-page response, addressing the following points.

Summarize in your words each of the four strategies: open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries.

Write up a transcript in which each of the four strategies is used while working with a hypothetical case study.

APA formatting is only required for citing sources and references.

OBJECTIVE 3: DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND TO RESISTANCE.

Even the most skilled clinicians do encounter resistance from clients. Clinicians who are implementing motivational interviewing strategies are encouraged to view resistance as an important developmental component. Since it has been established that adolescents and young adults differ in their developmental processing from adults, there are specifically tailored strategies for how to respond to resistance.
