When it comes to starting a business, it is important to have a clear vision of how this business will look. This does not necessarily involve physical appearance, as the “look” of the business also involves outlining a mission, along with values that are important to the business. Business should have some type of moral compass, ranging from how they will treat their customers to how complaints will be handled. Understanding this mission in the beginning will help processes run more smoothly later on. The following will discuss the mission and values of Cott Beverages, which is a production company in which I am currently employed.

MIssion

The history of Cott stems back to the 1950’s. It is one of the world’s largest producers on behalf of retailers and distributors, with the ability to service approximately 90 percent of US household, as well as offices. While the mission of Cott Beverages is not clearly outlined, it is committed to providing quality beverage products to as many consumers as possible. It strives to continue expansion in its consumer base and ultimately become a household name. It maintains the importance of innovation, while also partnering with other companies to pursue opportunity growth.

Vision

The vision of Cott Beverages is very simple, as they believe that success can only be obtained through discipline. Leadership and collaboration of team members in vital and they pride themself of the four “C’s”-customers, cost, capex, and cash flow. These principles are what guide each decision that is made. The goal is that each employee should treat the company as if they have a vested interested in it, as the reputation and operations should be held to the same standard as is it with the actual owners.

Role/Company’s Actions

The mission and vision of Cott Beverages plays a huge role in the operations of the company. The desire to reach the largest consumer base possible can sometimes translate in overtime hours for employees. This mean that we strive to meet goals and deadlines that are set each week. Managers are present and available at all times, providing assistance when needed. Local manufacturing companies are constantly arising throughout the US, which emphasizing the importance of expansion. Partnerships involve a number of major department stores, to include Walmart and Sams. These companies contract with Cott so that the products can be sold to customers. Since most customers are familiar with these department stores, it increases Cott’s popularity as well. Therefore, the company’s actions definitely align with their vision and mission.

How Might the Mission and Vision Guide Employees

Each employee should be guided by the company’s mission and values, including myself. Because expansion is so important, one way I personally contribute to this is by spreading the word to family and friends. I also allow the products to be featured in certain events outside of work, such as church functions or family reunions. Understanding the bigger picture also helps to go to extra mile when it comes to production, ensuring that products are made with the highest standard and striving to meet deadlines.

Lack of Mission/Vision

Not having a vision or mission statement means that the company has no direction. This is almost equivalent to embarking on a journey with no clear road map of where you are going. Eventually, you become lost and frustrated with the whole process, and never get where you are going. It is also important to have direction so that you understand when goals are met, along with identifying areas of improvement. Simply put, not having a mission or vision can be very detrimental to the success of a business.
