Run Charts and Control Charts
Why are run charts and control charts so useful in managing clinical services within a hospital or clinic? What is the difference between a run chart and a control chart? Also, provide at least one specific example of applying these charts in medicine.

On the one hand a run chart is a graph that displays observed data changes over a period of time. They are used in different departments and organizations to follow the progress of a particular aspect over a period of time. In hospitals, they are used to clinically monitor the progress of a patient and their response to treatment. A run chart is also called a run sequence plot. A control chart on the other hand is a tool which is used to determine whether a process or aspect of something is in control. Run charts are also called Shewhart charts (McConnell, 1987). Analysis of control charts will indicate whether a process is stable or unstable. The same data can be used to determine the future performance of that particular aspect.
