The novel The Bluest Eye (Morrison, 1970) revolved around an African-American 11-year old girl, Pecola Breedlove growing in the great depression era. Pecola has harsh features and a dark skin which is regarded to as ugly. Moreover, she comes from an unstable family characterized by violence. Her father, Cholly, suffers from a childhood trauma where white boys caught his sleeping with a girl for the first time and forced him to continue as they watch.
