Chapter 7 – Communication in Relationships
For this chapter, one of the key concepts is that of social exchange theory. I actually like one of the questions the text authors want you to think about in their exercises, so I’ll go ahead and put it out there for full discussion:
1) How do you weigh the costs and rewards in your relationships?
2) What are some rewards you are currently receiving from your closest relationships?
3) What are some costs?
4) I consider my college friends to still be my best friends, though one of them lives in Wisconsin, one in Illinois, one in Colorado, and several in Minnesota. Point being, I don’t see them all that often anymore, but we still share many bonds. Do you think that the friends you have now as college students, or perhaps from a previous stage of life, will be your friends still in 5, 10, even 20 years from now, if not longer? What makes you think so?
