I believe that there has not been a decline in racism. I believe that less and less people are reporting it.

I believe that there has not been a decline in racism. I believe that less and less people are reporting it. As an African American woman, I can say that I have been exposed to racism. I’ve never been called the N word, at least not to my knowledge, but I have heard the word thrown around a lot. Members of my family use it and I do not know why. In my opinion, it is an ugly word no matter how it is used. I can completely agree with Oprah Winfrey when she says her opinion on using the word (pg. 297, ed 10). I do believe N-a and N-er are completely different versions of the word. Whenever I hear anyone use it, it cuts my ear the way the C word does. My husband plays Xbox live and PlayStation online and I hear so many people, primarily white, calling other people on the game N-er. That may come off a little ignorant by me saying I can tell their race by their voice.

There are many different degrees of racism. For example, Jussie Smolett (pg. 307, ed. 10). He reported a hate crime in Chicago. In his report, he claimed that he was called slurs and assaulted. It later came out that he fabricated the whole thing. (Touchy subject). He still claims he is telling the truth. Only he and the two brothers that were involved know the complete truth. Regardless, now, because of the reactions that he received when the investigators announced the evidence that they collected, Jussie was deemed a liar. This will now make victims of hate crimes think twice about reporting due to the way Jussie was treated. Again, regardless if it was true. Not to side track, but this is very similar to rape victims who report their sexual assaults. Their lives are ripped apart and now under microscope by anyone with internet and not the sexual assailant themselves.

I don’t believe that racism in the contemporary U.S has declined. For example, an African American teenager has a ten times higher chance of being arrested for drugs and other related crimes than the whites (pg.294 ed.10). Rachel Dolezal was married to a black, and she was an activist of civil rights supporting the blacks. Her parents outed her being white due to her support for the blacks (pg.284 ed.10). The symbolism of interactions as a perspective in the united states portrays the existence of racism. Also, the black night is considered evil, but the white night considered moral. The power associated with language seen in words related to blacks shows the degree of racism in the U.S. Cake Food for the devil is deemed to be black, and terms used like the blacklisted, black sheep, black magic, and black plague indicate racism. They show negative attitudes towards the black. The word nigger is also used in referring the African American (pg.297 ed.10).
