Families As They Really Are, 2nd edition

Editors: Risman & Rutter

Publisher: W. W. Norton

1.According to the articles by Rockquemore and Henderson and Fong, how would you describe interracial marriage in the United States today? What are some of the issues faced by interracial couples? Describe some of the ways that interracial couples use “racial literacy,” as described by Rockquemore and Henderson, to resist racism and border patrolling. What are some other ways that couples resist racism?

2. Why is it important to understand cohabitation as an increasingly more typical experience for couples and families in the United States? In their conclusion, Smock and Manning note that young adults increasingly see cohabitation as “normal.” Do you agree that cohabitation has become “normalized”—that is, more or less okay to most people? Why or why not? Are there other social processes relating to adult relationships and/or families that you see as being “normalized” within our culture?
