Psych 100 – Homework #3: Real life application
Part I.
For this assignment, I am asking everyone to post on Blackboard.
Technical Steps: Login to Blackboard, click on Discussions, select the Assignment 3 Forum, and create a new thread for your assignment.
Content of Post: Briefly review one psychological concept we have covered in class, along with a real world example of this concept in action. The example could be something you witnessed or experienced, something you made up, something from a book/film/television, or from the news.
Note: Please don’t use an example in which the phenomenon has already been identified for you (for example, don’t describe a news report that talks ABOUT The bystander effect as an example of it; The idea is for you to do the work to find the phenomenon). Try not to use examples we have already used in class. The goal is to show you understand the concept well enough to apply it and explain it to others using your own example. Try to choose a concept that has not already been chosen and posted on Blackboard if possible.
Format: Be sure to name the concept you are referencing and also the Chapter/Topic it’s from in your post. Your post does not need to be long, a paragraph should be long enough. Please use full sentences. For once, do not worry about APA style. J
Deadline and grading: You must post your example by December 1 at 11:59pm. This post is worth 5 points of your final grade.

Concept: Mere Exposure Effect
The mere exposure effect describes how people’s attitudes toward an object improve just by being exposed to it repeatedly. For example, there is a table my roommate wanted to buy that I wasn’t sure if I liked at first when I checked it out online. However, I keep seeing it advertised on Facebook now because they must have tracked my web browsing, and the more I see it, the more I think I like it. Now that I know about the mere exposure effect, I think this might be just be based on seeing it repeatedly.”
Extra Credit:
For 1 point of extra credit on your final course grade, email me with a proposed topic and date if you would like to share your example with the class. We do not need to be covering that topic that day. Your presentation should take no more than 2-3 minutes. This will be a first come first serve opportunity, as I cannot have more than 3-5 students present per week and still cover enough material, so volunteer early if you are interested. Even if I have slots available, you will only be eligible if you email me by12pm the day before class.
