Part 1 Assignment Instructions

Answer each question fully, using complete sentences and in paragraph format, number each answer as it correlates to the question. In addition to using the textbook as a resource, you will need to use additional outside resources to complete this assignment.

Cite all outside resources used and use in-text citation for any quoted material.

Find an online open position announcement for a management role you may be interested in applying for in the near future.  This should be for a company in which you are able to do some basic research.Provide a link to the position.

Each numbered point is worth 25 points.

  1. Howwould you describe the management style, in terms of Theory X and Theory Y (Page37), of the overall company or the CEO? Does the position description match the style of the company/CEO?  In your opinion do the philosophies always need to match?
  2. Of the ten management roles (Page 20) which are emphasized in the position description? Why are those the roles that are emphasized?  What argument could you make for the roles that are not emphasized to still being important?
  3. Examine the company for evidence of the application of the more recent historical perspectives/trends in management. Does the company appear to be lacking innovative management? Is there something unique about the company/industry that makes you believe that the company should be more or less innovative?

Find a company which you would like to research.  Provide a link to the company’s website.  Examine the company and answer the following questions.

  1. Describe the external environment of the company looking both at the task environment and the General Environment. Also give a case of whether the company is in a high or low risk environment.

 

  1. Describe the culture of the company and how the company is responding to the environment. Make a case for if these steps are appropriate and adequate for the environment.
  2. Does the company do international business? If so what are some key sociocultural or economic differences that it should be aware of and why?  If not what are some sociocultural or economic reasons that will be difficult for an international company to compete with the company (If so what and why.  If not then why?)
  3. Evaluate how the company is managing its ethics and social responsibility. What are they doing?  If you had to place the company into one of the three stages of moral development which stage would you choose and why?

The management style at Blizzard Entertainment is Theory Y. This means that the company’s employees are left by the management to act on their own without direct and strict supervision. The company employs the do-it-yourself type of management. This is how the overall company is managed (us.blizzard.com).

In the available position, the description matches with the style of the company. The reason for this is because at this position I will be left to make decisions without being strictly supervised. In my opinion, it is good for the philosophies to match because lack of it may lead to confusion as a result of the conflicting philosophies….
