Results can be significant but not meaningful if the results do not have any social importance
Response 1
Results can be significant but not meaningful if the results do not have any social importance, are not practical, or no theoretical importance. Also the results could not be meaningful if the sample size is too small to represent the population. An example would be if I were to test the null hypothesis of there’s no different in the amount of push-up a 1st grader can do than a 5th grader in one minute. My results my favor the 5th grader but my results don’t contribute to any other past or future studies.
What I found interesting in this article is the effectiveness of inclusion. The articles talks about how the family units comes together on this day and decides who is in charge of what task. On Thanksgiving people decide as a family who has certain roles in the family. for example who is the care giver, the cook, or who sets the table. This reminded me of when I saw for the first time my mother kick my grandmother out of the kitchen on Thanksgiving. She kicked her our respectively of course because my grandmother has been cooking for 40 years, it was her time to relax on this holiday. In the study post of the participants were college students. What the participants reported back was problems with their family meeting boyfriends or girlfriends. If a boyfriend or girlfriend were from out of town that person would usually have a-lot of anxiety. I can also relate to this situation. When I first brought home my wife for Christmas she was extremely nervous until the day before we left. The study also talks about families that have been through a divorce. The article stated the children normal have to eat two meals, one at each of the parent’s house.
Chapter 8
1.) A study can be statistically significant but not meaningful because it has observed differences but these differences may not be of importance to the study. As an example, a town has a surplus of fast food restaurants there might be a survey done as to which fast food restaurants the population of the study likes more. Then a formal dining restaurant lowers costs to appeal to more consumers. There is a change in where consumers prefer to go but it is not of importance to the study because the study is directed to identify fast food preferences of the population not dining preferences all together.
Chapter 9
1.) As odd as this really sounds I don’t necessarily celebrate thanksgiving. I have been to other peoples thanksgiving meals and have never really thought that deeply about any of this. I actually came across one small section in the article and it caught my eye which was constructing togetherness through storytelling. It portrayed a good image of what being around loved ones is like for me. I personally do not have a family that does gatherings, celebrate holidays, or things of that nature, but when I am around my friends who I left home for to come to Troy that is what it is like for us. We have a big group of people together, some food, and a few cases of beer then we just tell stories about what has happened since the last time we all saw each other and reminisce with stories about things that we all had done as a group\
