I love that we have the USGBC (US Green Building Council) that certifies buildings that include lighting as a factor. The LEED certified buildings (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
addresses two options to minimize interior lighting that can cause light pollution: 1- automatically reduce the amount of light produced inside the building during nighttime hours
and 2- to automatically close shielding on all fenestration to prevent light from exiting the building (DiLouie, n.d.).
LEED certified buildings save money, improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions and create healthier places for people. They are a critical part of addressing climate change and meeting ESG goals, enhancing resilience, and supporting more equitable communities (“Mission and vision,” 2022).
I love that my hospital is a LEED certified building!
