I romanticize the life on a boat life Gary Thompson writes about, but I am not sure I could live well that way. Likewise, the places visited in Ann Beattie’s collection are unique, interesting but I don’t know if I could do New York. In both cases, these places I visit through the art of the writers present new ideas and understanding as to how we live and why we live the way we do.
In this essay we want to examine the value of place found in the stories and poem you have read. Before this examination of your reading, you want to research the meaning of place and region, how where we live affects us. To do this find writers who write essays of non-fiction asking after the meaning of place in our lives. Take notes and use these readings in support of your argument for place.
This done read Beattie and Thompson with the experts in mind. What do you discover? What argument can you make using our writers concerning place, its value, importance, and influence?
