#1 SJMy current role is in healthcare and we are structured in a functional structure. We are grouped by skill and report to VP\’s based on skill. Our company has a VP for every department. Our VP\’s are 100% responsible for each person in their department. Their roles do not cross over. Everyone in the company is under the Owner first and then our COO. I am one of the six people who report directly to the COO. This works well for our company. We provide every new employee with an org chart on their first day of employment. Everyone also signs a chain of command letter telling them who they will report directly too and how to handle questions regarding their position. This prevents employees from going to other directors to obtain assistance in their position. We are required to ask directors or supervisors for assistance before another employee can assist you. I think this works for us because people are being trained by only people who were chosen to teach them the desired outcome for each position. No one is learning a shortcut that eliminates a much needed step. We are overseen by state agencies and must have complete documentation of everything we do.

#2JFI have worked for Philips for over 10 years, so I am a little familiar with its operational structure. Philips is a global company that used the divisional organizational structure. Being a large corporation that works in different types of industries, such as electronics, healthcare, and kitchenware to name a few, I think is well suited within this type of organizational structure. In the past, Philips has used different organizational structures, such as functional. The functional organizational structure is as well a good option for Philips, but they rather have the divisional structure since it gets to focus more on direct industries that otherwise would be too wide for executive management to integrate and compare one industry to another. The matrix organizational structure would be also a good option and would yield results, the only problem that there is still some potential regarding industries that are not integrated into a division accordingly, but there are some advantages that could benefit the overall integration, such as information being shared among divisions at all levels, opposite to divisional where each sector is more focused toward its own industry. Flatarchy organizational structure would be beneficial only within certain sectors of Philips, making it really a matrix structure. Innovations are important for Philips, but the overall structure doesn\’t rely on innovations and designs, yes innovations are important, but once an innovation has been created or patented, they focus on production, sales, and the logistics of products.
