A function, in its simplest form, is a group of queries that accepts zero or more input variables, carries out some action on those input values, and outputs the result as an output variable (Elmasri & Navathe, 2016). A structured query language like SQL has several built-in system-defined functions, such as arithmetic functions like min and max. However, by using the CREATE FUNCTION method, we may also create user-defined functions. Functions are useful in situations where the same process must be carried out repeatedly or in numerous locations. We can create a single function and call it from many locations rather than writing the same set of queries repeatedly (Elmasri & Navathe, 2016). If we frequently need to write complex SQL scripts to carry out the same activity, we may construct a function that does the same thing more efficiently. So, the following time, we may just call the user-defined functions rather than rewriting the SQL.

One scenario where we want to use a user-defined function is in a department store where we want to calculate net sales of a product based on the quantity, price and discount rate. We can write a function that takes quantity, price and discount as parameters and then return the result based on the function logic: quantity * price * (1-dicount rate). Instead of writing the query for each product, we can provide this function for any product in the department store and it will calculate the net sales for the given product.

In mathematics, a function is an expression, rule, or law that establishes the connection between two variables. Since a linear function is one that most people are acquainted with, this presentation often begins with one. Functions as described above would seem to be another topic with little application to our daily life unless expertise are, for example, a mathematician or programmer which enabled us to produce a definition that was more precise, complete, and simple to comprehend. A function might result in objects that are significantly different in type from the inputs, as shown in the example above where spheres enter the function machine and emerge as cubes. Designing a function that has a set of people as the domain X and a set of numbers as the co domain is doable.
