THEATRE PERFORMANCE CRITIQUE

If the law is of such a nature that it requires you to be an agent of injustice to another, then I say, break the law.” So wrote a young Henry David Thoreau in 1849 after he put his belief into action and refused to pay taxes in protest of US involvement in the Mexican War…and that’s how Thoreau’s daring led to a night in jail. This feisty, poignant drama explores this famous act of civil disobedience and its consequences.

“Absolutely fascinating.” Richard L. Coe, The Washington Post

A good critique is a balanced perspective ofa combination of subjective

observations and responses (howyou “felt” about the production, first person

point of view) and objective analysis and support of your commentary. You can

show support throughexamples of specific descriptions of scenery, lighting,

costumes and sound, the theater space(stage), character relationships, and how

successfully the actorsfulfilled their roles of developing those characters.

The Night Thoreau Spent in jail entails a two-act play by Robert Edwin Lee and Jerome Lawrence that was plotted in 1970. The scripture is based on the early life of character Henry David Thoreau in the midst of a night he spent in cell after refusing to pay a poll tax on grounds that the taxes might be used to pay up for American soldiers who were at war with the Mexican soldiers. Henry was opposed to Mexican-American war and accused the government of using taxpayers’ money to oppress their neighbors.
