Throughout this course you have been exposed to and listened to some types of music that may have been unfamiliar to you. You may have had a different idea of what those types of music were “all about” – and your listening experience within the context of the history of rock music was surprising to you.
Identify two songs from the course Playlists that you were unfamiliar with and that you found thought provoking. How have the Weekly Modules materials influenced your opinion? (Minimum of three sentences about each song).

The Fracturing of the Genres” is the title of the final week’s videos – emphasizing that as the 1960’s comes to a close, “Rock” music begins to look a lot more like it does today – many different styles, sub-genres and vocabularies each having their distinct practitioners – and audiences. In this weeks videos we examined numerous genres and sub-genres: Soul and Funk, West Coast performance poetry and the jam-band, East Coast slice of gritty life “scenes” and minimal aesthetic, Female Leads (finally!) in collaborative groups, the craft of Pop songs, the Social Message song that is a commercial hit – and more. These are all now part of the popular music scene.
Identify two current/contemporary songs (released within the LAST 5 YEARS) that you think to fall into a specific “sub-genre” of rock music. For each song, explain your “genre reasoning” (NOT Google’s) with specific musical examples found within the songs. Be sure that each song is not from the same “sub-genre”! (Minimum of three sentences for each song).
