Research hypothesis function

I believe the function of the research hypothesis is to guide a person’s research. It helps a person go through existing research and find gaps in knowledge. This will help the researcher find those answers to the gap in knowledge. As the research goes through more existing knowledge they will develop more questions and figure out relationships between variables. Doing this will help the researcher narrow their research question. (Yegidis et al., 2017)

Generated hypothesis and variables

My research topic is what is causing homelessness for people with mental illness. After conducting a literature review I noticed that there are a lot of articles on this topic. Doing this helped me narrow down my research question. I was going through journal articles and found common answers to this question. Turning this into a quantitative question was a challenge. This is my question now, is there a relationship between homeless people with mental illness and family involvement in treatment. My hypothesis would be, there is a positive relationship between family involvement in treating a person’s mental illness and the mentally ill person’s living situation. The independent variable is how involved the family is in treating the person’s mental illness. This can be measured by what the family does to assist in treatment such as providing transportation to appointments. The dependent variable is the person’s living situation. This will change depending on how involved the family is in treatment. For example, if the family is not involved at all it is most likely that the person will end up homeless.
