American National Government

The assessment is an opportunity for students to intertwine text and media based representation of crime in the media.

Learning objectives:

Successful critical analysis of media representation of government.

Exceptional use of terminology in progressive presentation skills.

Efficient dissemination of political and citizen representation in media.

Achievement of advanced analysis of media portrayal of politics.

Effective ability to disseminate fact from fiction in media coverage of politics.

Requirements of the assessment: Students must review media (TV shows, network shows, newspaper, YouTube). They must review 5 pieces of media for the project. These videos, newspaper articles, pictures and other media that students perceive as important must be uploaded or copy and pasted or linked in a PowerPoint or Google slide presentation. Students must answer the following questions for each piece of media they submit on the slides. All of the media must be examined, analyzed and presented through a political lens. The dates, times and networks of the media must be cited properly. The objective is to truly understand how the media portrays the government to the people. The assessment should have 5-10 slides (1-2 for each piece). This is an exercise in professional presentations of your work. In your careers you will make presentations so master this skill. This project is worth 15 points.

Each media slide must be connected to at least three of the questions below for a firm analysis:

Was the media piece biased for a political party?

Was the media piece used as an exploitative piece to cause politicians to act on a civil issue?

If so, is it effective?

Why is the piece presented as political? What is its importance?

What is its significance to the American public?

What were the ethnicities and gender of the people involved in the piece? Is it of importance to present these people in the piece?

Was the piece focused upon victim or offender?

Was the court system presented? Why?

What politicians were presented? Why?

What public policy was presented? Why?

Billboards, magazine ads, newspaper ads and stories, promotional mailers, etc. What is the most powerful medium that can be used (social media cannot be included as we have 80 million baby boomers who aren’t tech savvy) to influence the public regarding new public policy initiatives?
