Essay Assignment – Clearly the labor movement had an evident and compelling mission in those early years to provide workers with basic rights and protections. Many would argue today’s unions have lost that noble purpose, others would dispute that.
How do you believe the American labor movement’s early purpose and need has evolved over the years since The Inheritance?
Watch “The Inheritance.” This video is a classic documentary about American workers and their struggles to organize unions and improve working conditions for workers in this country. The video was produced in the 1960s by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (now a part of UNITE-HERE). The story is told from the union point of view. It has a lot of great footage of early living and working conditions and of conflicts between unions, employers, and sometimes the government.
