These marketing solutions that have been in the works over the last 40 years are movements to ensure that the healthcare field remains competitive and doesn’t become a monopoly situation where a patient is forced to pay for something that just isn’t available elsewhere. With the mergers that were discussed last week, the quality of care and premiums rise the more that the bigger hospitals consume the smaller practices. The economic policy is in place to ensure that the mergers do not get out of line to the point where the hospitals take full control and advantage of the patients in which they are caring for when it comes to the overhead cost. Barrios (2015), “Both camps typically expect competition to do the following things: strengthen patient choice, stimulate innovation, improve quality, enhance efficiency and control costs — in short, to give people what they want in the least costly way possible” (para. 1). Having competition allows for the access and cost for care be more at the patient’s discretion versus being forced into using the only available hospital.
