Supply chain management is a critical component of any organization. It determines the speed, efficiency, and cost of goods and services to customers. The local culture and practices of foreign markets may differ dramatically from the domestic market where an organization typically conducts its operations. Cultural considerations that must be considered are the current state of economic development, such as emerging or highly industrialized nations. Operations managers must understand the cost implications to offer practical and personalized supply chain solutions to different cultural markets. Emerging economies will favor a more efficient supply chain system that reduces costs rather than a more flexible system indicative of higher costs associated with convenience.

Emerging economies may have limited working capital; thus, a more efficient system would lower operating costs, allowing the economy to operate with a margin of safety for risk contingencies. Local environmental concerns, terrain, and demographics are also factors that operations managers must consider when implementing a supply chain system. For example, the country I have chosen for my case study in the Philippines. The Philippines is an archipelago located in Southeast Asia. Due to the numerous islands (over 7,000), the Philippines relies heavily on maritime transportation rather than land-based distribution methods. Operations managers must assess the potential limitations of the supply management capabilities to be implemented into a foreign market operation. Sourcing local logistical operations would result in decreased operating costs as local logistical companies would already be familiar with the requirements of the host nation. Thus additional training would not be required. It is advantageous for the organization to utilize the outsourcing capabilities of the host nation to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain efforts (Business Coach, 2021).
