I find that the theme of hope is most portrayed in all the selection. The first selection of slavery highlights the various challenges Black Americans went through before being given their freedom and how they fought for equal rights. When reading the selection, the different Black Americans, who were slaves, were hopeful of living in a free world without prejudice. Also, the collection of civil rights books highlights how the characters were optimistic of living free from segregation and fought for equal rights.
The main traits of the characters from the collection of the book are determined, selfless, and caring. These traits are essential due to the tasks they were planning to do and trying to change the perception of society. For example, in Fredrick’s Journey, it is necessary to have these traits, since it is not an easy task. Differences in time periods can be observed in the books. However, the difference is not long. In the book ‘Unspoken’, the time period is in the late 1800s after the American Civil War. However, in the book ‘NightJohn’, the of is before the American Civil War, at a time when slaves were escaping bondage and fleeing to the North.
Some of the literary elements in ‘Brown Girl Dreaming’ is the use of foreshadowing, where the family tree presented at the beginning foreshadows some of the aspects of the story, such as her grandfather’s death, and Jacqueline’s small brother. In Frederick’s Journey, some of the historical information includes how the Black men came to participate in the Civil War. In other books, historical information on how particular black men fought for change in society.
