How does Daniel’s leadership style affect the motivation of employees

How does Daniel’s leadership style affect the motivation of employees at The Copy Center?

One objective of the path-goal theory is to use a leadership style that best meets the motivational needs of the follower. To do this, the leader must complement or supplement what is missing in the work setting (Northouse, 2016). Daniel caters his leadership style to what motivates each group of employees. He recognizes that his part-time staff is comprised of mostly students and require a more flexible schedule. He is very understanding to schedule conflicts and works around them the best he can. He also understands that their job duties are mundane. To counter this, he created a work environment that is laid back and fun. Daniel recognizes that his full-time employees are motived in a different manner. They are self-starters and self-motivators, so they need little attention. They are independently creative, so Daniel only intervenes when asked.

Daniel’s leadership style parallels those of sustainable management. He understands that the talent is the most important asset to any organization. It is important for SMOs to treat their talent as individuals by giving them the opportunity to customize their work arrangement (Lawler & Worley, 2011). Daniel has demonstrated this point by creating a fun and friendly work environment. He understood what would motivate each group of staff and catered to those needs.

How do characteristics of the task and the followers influence Daniel’s leadership?

The Copy Center has two main functions/tasks with two types of employees performing those tasks. The part-time staff works in the duplicating area. The tasks are very straightforward and tedious, and the staff can become bored and unsatisfied. Because of this, Daniel demonstrates supportive leadership behavior. He allows his staff to dress casually, he converse with them informally, and allows them to be a bit wild. The second group of staff members are employed full-time and work in the desktop publishing area. The tasks in this area are more complex and require certain skills. The full-time staffers have high expectations for themselves as well as the work they produce. Daniel demonstrates an achievement oriented leadership with this group. He gives them space to allow creativity but is always available when they need help.
