This week’s prompt will focus on Faulkner’s “Barn Burning.” Interior monologue plays a large role in the development of this story–specifically the interior dialogue of the main character, the boy. Go through and review the boy’s interior monologue and in 2-3 double spaced pages, respond to the prompt below:
Examine the boy’s “interior monologues,” the italicized parts of the story. What do these tell us about the boy, about others, about Faulkner’s style(s) of narration? Analyze each occurrence of interior monologues. There are at least 5 places in the story where these monologues take place.

In the story “Barn Burning” by Faulkner, a ten-year-old Sarty is the extraordinary hero of the entire story. The boy’s father compels him to help burn barns, and lie about it later, but the boy has a distinct sense of justice. He might have developed this from spending some time in courtrooms while listening to the proceedings.
