Essay 4: Issues from Group Presentation Chapter

  • 150 points, which is 15% of your grade
  • 3-5 pages
  • Internet research required: Must have quotes from textbook and two other sources.

Introduction:

You can generate research questions by responding to the rhetorical situation provided by your assignment and by considering what interests you the most about the topic.  Even if your whole class is writing on the same topic, each person will present a different argument or approach to the issue  . . . The way you make a research project your own is by developing powerful research questions.

Assignment Description:

Select an issue related to the chapter your group presented, and present a specific, debatable argument (it should be possible for readers to disagree with your claim).  You are welcome to use claims of value, cause/effect, or policy (problem/solution).

Make sure that your topic falls under your chapter’s articles and not some other issue.  If you have any doubts about your topic being related to your topic, please check with me.

In order to earn a C or above, your essay should include:

  • a minimum of 3 FULL double-spaced pages (not 2 and ½, or even 2 and ¾.  Every available line should be used)  Include an APA cover page and an abstract. These do not count towards your page minimum. The paper must be three pages excluding cover, abstract, and reference pages.
  • 12-point Times New Roman font and 1” margins.  See sample student paper used for peer review training.
  • an introduction that sets up your argument about the article
  • a thesis that makes a specific, debatable claim about the topic you have selected.
  • effectively organized paragraphs with strong topic sentences and transitions
  • You must have at least three sources, and no more than one can be from your textbook. References to or examples from no less than two Woodbury database articles (can be summaries or paraphrases in your own words and sentence structure, or brief, correctly integrated direct quotations).
  • Proper APA page headers
  • Proper APA in-text citations for all paraphrases and direct quotations
  • a conclusion that does not merely restate your thesis but that leaves the reader with further “food for thought.”
  • a References page in correct APA format (which does NOT count towards your page minimum) since you will be quoting from at least one Envision in Depth article and your internet research.

Additional criteria:

  • Clear argument or position on the issue you have chosen.
  • Demonstrated understanding of analyzing texts, strategies of persuasion, and composing arguments as explained in Ch. 1-3
  • Demonstrated understanding of finding and evaluating sources as explained in Ch. 4-5.
  • Effective essay structure
  • Clear and precise sentence-level rhetoric (grammar and structure)

Tips and Reminders:

  • Your method of development will vary depending on which essay topic you choose.
  • See “At a Glance” on page 67 and “Strategies of Arrangement” on page 68 (both in Ch. 3) for basic organization options.
  • Be sure to back up your comments with specific details from a text we’ve discussed in class and from your Internet research.  In other words, support what you are saying with paraphrases, and quotes from the texts. You will want to consult the information presented in Chapter 7 on “Avoiding Plagiarism and Documenting Sources,” as well as the APA handout on Moodle.

Assignment Steps and Due Dates:

All assignment steps should be typed in a word processing program and saved to a place you can easily find them.

Prewriting (15 points):                                                                                               Due:_Tues. Oct. 28_________

  1. Brainstorm a list of issues from your chapter that particularly concern you. These can be from the readings but do not necessarily have to be either.
  2. Select 2 of the ideas from your list and freewrite for about 5 minutes on each.
  3. Pick a sentence from each of your freewrites that you like most, and retype them both.
  4. Pick one of the sentences you retyped in #3 and freewrite on it for 5 minutes.
  5. Is there an issue here you’d like to take a position on?  If so, what is that issue?  If not, what other issue from your brainstormed list do you think you might like to explore as a potential topic?
  6. For the issue you decided on, make a list of potential main ideas your essay would need to address.
  7. Find at least one quote from the chapter’s articles that you think might work well in your essay.
  8. What type of information will you need in order to present an argument on this topic?  What search terms do you plan on using in the Woodbury databases?  You’ll need to list some synonyms in case you get stuck.

Rough Draft (20 points)                                                                                             Due:_Tues. Nov.4___

Bring 2 stapled copies of your 3-5 full-page, typed, rough draft to class on time in order to earn full credit.  You’ll need one copy for me to look at to make sure you’re on the right track, as well as one copies for your peer review group.  Not meeting the minimum page and/or copy number requirement will result in a significant deduction in points.

Final Draft (130 points):                                                                                            Due: Thurs. Nov. 6_____

Your final draft should be the result of careful, multiple revisions informed by feedback from me and from your peers.  Take care to ‘put your best foot forward’ not only in terms of accuracy and presentation, but also in terms of planning ahead and avoiding any last minute problems with transportation, printers, etc.  If you are late to class with your essay, points will be deducted from your final score.

Directions for submitting your final draft:

  1. Upload your essay to turnitin.com
  2. Print your essay and staple it
  3. Come to class early or on time.  When I confirm that your essay has been uploaded to turnitin.com, I will accept your final draft for grading
