History Document Analysis

Description
Students will analyze a specific historical document chosen from one of the documents in
the Documents folder on TRACS. The analysis will have four distinct parts:
(1) Identification of
the document which will include the title of the document; the author(s) if stated; the date (if
known) on which the document was written, appeared, or issued; the place where the document
originated; and the intended purpose of the document;
(2) pertinent historical background that
places the document in the proper time and place;
(3) a description of the contents of the
document itself [that is summarize the contents of the document];
(4) an assessment of the
importance of the document for understanding the nature of the time period in which it appeared
(that is, how does reading the document affect your knowledge of this particular period in
history).
The analysis will consist of a written essay of three typed, double-spaced pages (about
750 words) divided into the four parts. A bibliography of at least one source used to write the
paper, other than the textbook, must be attached to the analysis. The source can be book from
the library or an article from the JSTOR online database available through the Alkek web site.
The textbook can be used as a second source if you wish. Do Not Use Wikipedia or any other
encyclopedia as a source. Do not use any internet sources other than JSTOR. All material
taken from a source must be paraphrased by the student before it is utilized in the document
analysis. Simply copying information from an source and pasting it into the analysis
constitutes
PLAGIARISM and is prohibited. References to author and page number of printed
sources or articles from JSTOR should be indicated in parenthesis. (Doyle, 12)
Papers must be word-processed and stapled. (Unstapled papers will not be accepted.)
Double space and use Times Roman 12 pt. font. The paper should have a title at the top of the
first page as well as your name, but a title page is not necessary. All pages should be numbered,
and the total word count of the text [excluding the bibliography] should be noted at the end of
the text. The analysis is to be written in good English prose; use proper grammar and spell
words correctly. Summarize information from the articles or books. DO NOT QUOTE
DIRECTLY FROM THE DOCUMENT, ARTICLES, OR BOOKS. All papers should be
spell-checked before they are printed. Be sure to make a second copy of your paper for your
records and save an electronic copy to disk. Lost data on disks is not an acceptable excuse for
late papers
