How has the history colonialism affected Hong Kong and its government

Paper Prompt #1: Protest in Hong Kong

Prompt:

For months, Hong Kong has seen demonstrations by pro-democracy protesters, and tensions are escalating. How do histories of colonialism, nationalism, imperialism, human rights, and globalization relate to the ongoing unrest in Hong Kong?

Directions:

Your paper should be 1000-1200 words or about 3-4 pages. Use Times New Roman font in size 12. Please pay careful attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation. Remember that citations are required for both paraphrasing and direct quotes from either the text or lecture. Feel free to cite other books and articles as needed. Include a full list of works cited at the back (APA, MLA or other citation standard). Please submit your paper on the course website by 11:59 pm on October 30th.

Some things to think about:

How has the history colonialism affected Hong Kong and its government? How does national identity play into their discontent?

What are the goals of protesters? In what situation do you see both sides conceding? Is there a peaceful solution?

How might the unrest have regional and global significance? Would certain outcomes have far-reaching implications?
