Paper Assignment Part of your grade for this course will be based on a research paper, of at least ten pages in length, which deals with a single work of art from the Italian Renaissance period (c.1250-1550) or with a controversial topic about the art of the period. A list of pre-approved topics. In order to write the paper, you should consult and use at least four different scholarly written sources in which experienced and professional art historians deal with your work of art.    The final result of your reading and research should be a well-written analysis of your work of art or your topic. It should include relevant historical background, visual descriptions, and discussions of the content of the work and its function in its own time or of the important issues within the controversy. Consider the major contributions of the artists, the significance and influence of the works, and any innovative ideas that are presented. When possible, discuss the various contributions that scholars have made to our understanding of your topic. Explain all your points with reference to specific visual details. All papers must be typewritten in a font size between 10 and 12, double-spaced, with no larger than one-inch margins. An electronic version of the paper will NOT be accepted. The paper is due November 27, 2012 and is to be handed to the instructor or left in a sealed envelope with the department’s Administrative Associate in LY406 by 11:15 AM. If your paper is not handed in on November 27, it will receive one point grade reduction for each weekday it is late (i.e., a grade of 19/20 will be a 17/20 if the paper is two weekdays late). It is up to the discretion of the instructor to allow students to rewrite their papers in order to improve their grade. Papers will be graded based on the format noted below:    1-5 points = assessment of original ideas and research    1-8 points = organization and accurate “Works Cited” page    1-7 points = fulfillment of assignment requirements You are required to do additional research for this paper; you MUST CITE ANY SOURCES of information other than “general knowledge” Use the Modern Languages Association as a citation guide. Internet sources may be used, but they are NOT sources of general knowledge.
