Global Sport Project (30%)
(Proposal 5%, Presentation 5%, Final Paper 20%) KNES 285-001, Fall 2017

Proposal Due Wednesday, November 8, 5:00pm on Blackboard Final Paper Due Monday, November 27, 9:00am on Blackboard Presentation Dates: 11/27, 11/29, 12/1, 12/4, 12/6, 12/8

For this final project, you will choose a “global sport” topic that is of your interest. The purpose of this project is to have you demonstrate your ability to apply course concepts when analyzing sports or physical culture from a critical cultural perspective. This project includes two parts: 1) a 5-minute in-class presentation and 2) a final research paper (1,500 words minimum).

The topic can be on one of the following three options:

Global Physical Culture: A particular global sport or physical culture within a particular cultural context – for example, rugby in New Zealand, handball in Germany, sumo- wrestling in Japan, table tennis in China, or curling in Canada.

Global Sport Organization: A specific team, league or competition within a particular nation, such as a national team or a team with a connection to a particular nation, region or city. For example, the Australian Rules football league, the World Wushu Championships, or the Russian national ice hockey team.

Global Sport Athlete: A particular (non-American) athlete with a connection to a particular nation, region or city – for example Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, Korean baseball player Hyun-soo Kim, or Canadian Ice Hockey player Wayne Gretzky.

Note: American sports, organizations and athletes are not allowed for this assignment. Also, you are not allowed to choose a topic which I already covered in class (i.e., Cricket in the West Indies; NBA in China; Baseball in Taiwan, etc.). If you are unsure if a potential topic is allowed, please come talk to me.

Proposal (5%):

A proposal should be turned in on November 8. The proposal should include the following two parts:

1) Project Topic Overview (300-400 words)

o Explain the specific topic (sport, organization or athlete) that you are planning to focus on, and the cultural context of this topic.

o Brief discussion of a potential thesis statement: What would be your argument, and what would be the course concepts (e.g., colonialism, cultural imperialism, globalization, Americanization, etc.) you will use in this paper?

o Brief discussion of why you are interested in this topic.
o Brief discussion of any sources that you’ve encountered about this topic: What do

you know about the topic at this point? 2) Research and Sources

o Include a full citation (APA or Chicago style) and brief explanation of at least one scholarly source (journal article or book chapter) from your own research

o Include a full citation (APA or Chicago style) and brief explanation of at least one popular source (magazine or newspaper article) from your own research

Consultation Meeting:

Each person will meet with me for 5-10 minutes during the week of November 13 to discuss the topic and your progress.

Presentation and Final Paper (Pres. 5%, Paper 20%):

In both the presentation and the final project, you should focus on researching and articulating the historical and cultural significance of the topic as well as the theoretical framework you can engage with. Consider the following questions:

o Why is it important?
o What kind of historical context makes it important?
o What does this sport/athlete/team mean to the people of a specific national context? o How does this case relate to the theoretical frameworks we have discussed, such as

globalization, cultural imperialism, cultural resistance, Americanization, nationalism, or transnationalism?

Each person will do a 4-5 minute PowerPoint presentation that corresponds with the paper. Creativity is encouraged. (Attendance is REQUIRED on all presentation dates.)

In the final paper, you must cite and use at least two external scholarly sources (i.e., journal article, book chapter, or book). Websites and popular sources can be used but will not count as a scholarly source. Do NOT cite Wikipedia. Make sure to include a reference list both with the final paper and on the final slide of the presentation (follow either APA or Chicago format)
