Developing Authentic Assessments

A variety of formative assessment materials, including performance tasks, assessments, and rubrics,
developed for two different scenarios.
Demonstration of Proficiency
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following
course competency and assessment scoring guide criteria:
 Competency: Develop a variety of authentic assessment techniques for use in classroom
instruction.
o Create a performance task for each scenario that provides students with meaningful
practice and application of concepts and skills.
o Create an authentic assessment for each scenario that directly measures the skills and
knowledge students are asked to practice and apply.
o Create a holistic or analytic rubric that directly measures what students are expected to
know and/or do for each performance task and authentic assessment.
o Explain how the performance tasks, authentic assessments, and rubrics will
authentically guide and measure real-world application of each of the skills and
concepts students are asked to demonstrate in each scenario.

Instructions
Note: Complete this assessment using the Developing Authentic Assessments Template [DOC].
Read through the following three scenarios. Choose two of them, and develop at least one performance
task, one authentic assessment, and a rubric (holistic or analytic) for each.
1. You are experiencing drought in your state. The governor has asked your class to come up with
solutions to produce more water and promote conservation to residents.
2. You have been given $5,000 to redesign your classroom. The principal has tasked your class with
creating an accurate and detailed drawing of the finished classroom and coming up with a
detailed budget for making all of the changes. You must also justify how each budget item
supports learning.
3. There has been great debate and outrage over a new rule that was issued in the cafeteria that
students are not allowed to get out of their seats until the bell rings. The principal has tasked
your class with investigating the root cause of this issue and issuing a verdict as to whether the
rule is just, fair, and should remain in effect.
Your performance tasks, assessments, and rubrics should include the following:
 Elements of guided practice and active and engaging tasks.
 Opportunities to extend the learning beyond objectives.
 Opportunities to provide remediation for struggling learners and for troubleshooting during unit
completion.

 Tasks that ask students to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
 Assessments that directly measure real-world application of each of the skills and concepts you
want students to know and/or be able to do in each scenario.
Additional Requirements
 Make sure you describe each authentic assessment in enough detail that anyone reading your
work could implement the assessment in his/her classroom.
 Cite at least two reputable sources to support your work.
 Your paper should span 3–5 pages. Be sure to follow the Developing Authentic Assessments
Template when describing and analyzing the authentic assessment you develop for each
scenario
