For this exercise, you need to visit the Web site for your favorite make of automobile (e.g., Toyota, Ford, Lexus).  Spend some time exploring the site, especially any company information (such as the company’s annual report, press kit, mission/vision statements.  Using your favorite search engine (e.g. Google), locate at least two sources of information about current/future trends in the auto industry.

To receive credit for this exercise, create a new journal entry and answer the following questions:

1. What company did you explore? Briefly explain why you selected this company.

2. Based on what you learned on the company’s Web site, identify several strengths and weaknesses of the company.  What is the company’s biggest strength?  Why?  What is the company’s biggest weakness? Why?

3. Based on the external information you reviewed, identify several opportunities and threats facing the auto industry.  In your opinion, which threat will have the greatest impact on your selected company? Why?

4. Briefly explain how your selected company can leverage its strengths (relative to the opportunities) to create competitive advantages in the future?

In this paper, I opt to explore Ford Motor Company. The inspiration behind my choice is the rich history of the company. Since its inception in 1902, Ford Motor Company continues to manufacture vehicles for both civilian and military use. Ford is built on family and friendship. Since Henry-ford, the company’s founding CEO left office; all his predecessors are his direct relatives. Initially, Henry was a chief engineer at Edison’s Illumination Company.
