Paper details: WRIT 102, Food Theme Instructor: Shanna Flaschka
Synthesis Essay
In this assignment, you will find an argument to compare and contrast with the one in the film Food, Inc. You will analyze the film as one that either corresponds with the information presented in Food Inc. or disagrees with it.

As you make your argument, you will synthesize (put together) two sources (i.e., the films) on the same topic into one essay to see how the sources speak to each other and your ideas and how they support your own argument. To do so, you will develop a thesis about your viewing of the film, and then you will use one or both sources to reinforce your ideas, or you may find that you are better able to articulate your point in opposition to these films.

Do not simply summarize the films; assume that the reader has viewed both of them. SHOW, don’t TELL. Instead, use the films to highlight and exemplify your own ideas about the argument. What do the films get right? Which one is stronger and why? What has been left out?

Your analysis paper should accomplish the following:
DECIDE WITH WHICH SECTION(S) OF FOOD INC. THE FILM YOU CHOSE CORRESPONDS.
Clearly state which argument has an overall comprehensive, conclusive, and persuasive argument.
Briefly summarize the film you chose to compare to Food Inc.’s argument. This should warrant only a few sentences.
Discussing the detail, credibility, attention to pathos/logos/ethos, use of visual rhetoric (if there is any), etc.
You should use in-text citations from both sources to edify your claims about which argument is more successful.
In your introduction, you will provide your audience with interesting and relevant thoughts that lead up to your thesis statement. You should state your thesis at the end of your introduction paragraph(s).
You will then structure each body paragraph as follows:
Each reason/point should have its own paragraph. You should state your reason at the beginning of the paragraph.
You should support your reason with evidence (quotes, paraphrases, and examples) from the films.
You should explain your evidence—How does the evidence back up your reason and thesis?
EACH body paragraph should use evidence from the films to bolster your main idea.
You will conclude the essay with a paragraph that wraps up your ideas without repeating your introductory thoughts.

Purpose
To compare and contrast two viewpoints in order to shape one’s own argument by using analysis, evidence, and persuasive use of logic, ethics, and emotion.

Message
You will be participating in an ongoing academic conversation, and you are doing so with more depth than in your in-class essay exam.

Audience
Someone in an academic field who has seen Food Inc.’s argument but maybe not the argument that you have chosen. This person may or may not agree with your stance.

Format
Your essay should be 4-5 pages—that means at least four full pages—double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins, and correct MLA formatted header and heading.

Assessment
Your synthesis essay is worth 15% of your grade, and your final draft will be worth 100 points. Failure to complete this essay will prohibit a passing grade. Please note: If you show up to class on assessment or peer review day without a draft or with an incomplete draft, you will receive a 10-point penalty on the essay’s final grade.
