In oceanography, tidal waves may refer to a tidal bore, a storm surge, a tsunami or a mega tsunami.  A tidal bore occurs when an incoming tide is funneled into a river or a narrow bay. Storms surges are violent waves capable of flooding the coastal areas, though they can be held back by flood defenses. Tsunamis are waves that devastate the entire coastal area and a few kilometers inland. Mega tsunamis have effects of greater proportion compared to ordinary tsunamis.
