American Nurses Association
The healthcare organization website that I reviewed was the American Nurses Association (ANA), a professional nursing organization that you may become a member of to enjoy benefits such as career advancement, free and discounted continuing education credits, networking with colleagues, and the ability to join advocacy efforts and participate in legislative initiatives (American Nurses Association, n.d.). After reviewing the ANA website including their mission, vision, and values, there was no mention of EBP directly anywhere in these. Although one of the ANA values is innovative stating that they are open to change in order to strive for excellence, and their mission is “lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care” (ANA Enterprise, n.d.) Evidence-based practice (EBP) is defined by Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt as “lifelong problem-solving approach to the delivery of healthcare that integrates the best evidence from a body of research with a clinician’s expertise and a patient’s preferences and values to make the best decisions about patient care” (2023, pp.7). With that definition it can be inferred that EBP would be used and very much necessary in order to accomplish the value and mission of ANA mentioned above.
Upon further digging into this website aside from the main goals mentioned above I was also able to use the search feature of the website to type in evidence-based practice and was taken to their Practice & Advocacy section where there is an entire sub section dedicated to “What Is Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing?” (American Nurses Association, n.d.). This sub-section contains some great information including how to use EBP in nursing, examples of EBP, five simple steps to implementing EBP into nursing practice, and benefits of EBP (American Nurses Association, n.d.).
After this review I would say my perception of the ANA has not been changed at all, I still view this professional nursing organization as a great resource for any nurse, nursing student, or advanced practice nurse. Even though the words EBP wasn’t stated directly in their mission, vision, and values it is obvious that it would be utilized by this organization to accomplish these. Most importantly the ANA states how essential EBP is to the healthcare field and nursing as it “delivers innovative patient care using the most current healthcare findings” (American Nurses Association, n.d.).
