Fairness, Equity, and Justice;
It can be argued that promoting fairness, equity, and justice in the workplace and our communities is a duty and obligation of HRER practitioners and the HR profession. This is consistent with SHRM’s Code of Ethics Fairness and Justice core principle which states:
•Core Principle: “As human resource professionals, we are ethically responsible for promoting and fostering fairness and justice for all employees and their organizations” (Society for Human Resource Management [SHRM], 2014).
•Intent: “To create and sustain an environment that encourages all individuals and the organization to reach their fullest potential in a positive and productive manner” (SHRM, 2014). (See SHRM website.)

Consequently, it can be argued that to promote fairness and justice for employees and their organizations, it is the duty and responsibility of HRER practitioners and the HR profession to address issues discussed in this lesson regarding ethical and socially responsible AI. Failure to address issues like algorithmic bias that may have a disproportionate adverse impact on employees (e.g., women and people of color), can be viewed as a dereliction of the SHRM Code of Ethics and our duty as thought leaders, solutions providers, ethical stewards, and trust advisers.
Furthermore, how can we profess to add and create value to our organizations if we are not actively addressing issues related to discrimination and oppression of employees resulting from unethical and socially unacceptable AI?
