When assessing learning gained through experience, evaluators need to have access to documentation that verifies the student’s life experience. Academic integrity requires such verification to ensure that the experiences written about are the authentic, personal experiences of the student seeking approval. Without documentation, Lifelong Learning Assessment (LLA) papers will not be evaluated for credit. For this reason, documentation must be submitted at the same time a learner submits his or her LLA paper.
The Documentation Pyramid shows different levels of documentation. At the highest point are documents considered official, whether from government offices or receipts from corporate entities. The most common include birth certificates, operator’s licenses, marriage certificates, pay stubs from established companies, and medical records. A single official record is usually all that is needed to confirm a student’s learning experience actually occurred.
What if the learning event did not involve government or corporate documentation? The next most reliable sources are professionals in the community (e.g., clergy, police, law professionals, judges, and teachers). Other community sources include a local newspaper or news channel that reported the event. Publications from local nonprofit organizations may sufficiently establish that an event occurred. When these documents are available, only one recorded source is needed. If relying on affidavits from community professionals, learners must provide at least two sources. These do not need be notarized as long as the full name, position, and contact information of the writer are provided.
Third-party testimonials are provided by those closest to the learner (friends, family, peers, and other eyewitnesses) and may validate the occurrence of a learning experience. Because this form of documentation has the potential for the most abuse, at least three third-party affidavits must be submitted, and they must be notarized. Students can often go to their banks to have documents notarized at low or no cost. Most states also set maximum limits on what can be charged for notary services.
