When the pandemic hit with the coronavirus it negatively highlighted the inequity of healthcare treatment and delivery. The inequities are not limited to the coronavirus. African American individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Many researchers believes the complex ties to racism, discrimination and social determinants of health including income, health care and education. Many rural populations have limited access to primary care physicians than residents of urban areas and poorer than urban counterparts. Rural areas have to travel long distances to access healthcare services. Even though rural communities have public transportation many patients may not have the funds or some transportation may not go into the area. Many individuals without healthcare insurance have less access to healthcare services. Researchers show that 2011-2015 revealed 19.9% of infants in rural areas did not have insurance and is greater than 16.8% of infants in urban areas who lack insurance coverage. With telehealth services being more popular since the pandemic many areas lack access to broadband internet and slow internet speeds.
