The Benefits of Registration
What are the benefits of registration with the Copyright Office? What can you as a copyright owner do after federal registration that you could not do without it? How much of a practical advantage is the ability to claim damages under the statute as opposed to under common law principles? Would your answers differ if the subject of the copyright were a book, a song, or a computer program? Would the answer be different if you wanted to copyright the title to the book you just wrote?
