Do a little research and find a company that owns media properties (TV, internet, movies, music, etc.) and tell me what all they own. The only caveat is that you can’t choose Disney, which has an ownership stake in Marvel, ESPN, ABC, Lucasfilm … and so on and so on. This is what I want:
– Give us a very brief company history (when was it founded, where are its headquarters, what did it start out as)
– Tell us AT LEAST five different entities it owns, preferably in different areas of the media landscape (internet, TV, movies, publishing), but if there are others outside of the media world, that’s fine, too.
– Tell us how much the company is valued at presently.
– Finally, tell us how any of its recent mergers and buyouts have affected you as a media user and consumer. For example, I have basically stopped using Facebook … but am an avid user of Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.
What I don’t want to see is, “none of these mergers affects me.” Dig deeper. Pull the string a little bit and I can almost guarantee one or more mergers over the history of the company affects you or has affected you. For example, I’m not a Comcast subscriber and never will be because I understand they have horrible customer service, but I occasionally watch shows on NBC, which is owned by Comcast.
