  1. This homework about emergency communications has two parts. The first part is about how *you* would like to communicate with police, fire department, or ambulances in emergencies. I’d especially like to know if you think using appsis a good idea.

The second part is intended to give you an idea of how people react under stress, and make you think about what this means for emergencies. Does this change your opinion about apps for emergencies?

Part 1: Answer the following questions, 2-3 sentences each.

  1. What do you prefer for communicating with emergency responders (e.g. police, fire department, ambulance)? VRS, text messaging, e-mail, emergency appon phone, or something else? And why?
  2. Were you aware of Gallaudet’s EmergenSeeapp? (http://www.gallaudet.edu/dps/emergensee_mobile_safety_app.html) Have you used it? If yes: what do you like/dislike about it? If no, will you use it in the future?

Part 2: Read the article below, and answer the questions, 2-3 sentences each

  1. What happens to creative thought under stress?
  2. The pilots had to deal with an unfamiliar situation. Would it have helped if they had been trained for this situation?
  3. Do you think that people are stressed when they have an emergency and need to call 9-1-1?
  4. What is better for calling 9-1-1: A simple technology that people use every day, or a new better technology that people are unfamiliar with? Does stress or training have something to do with it?
