The Color Purple by Alice Walker showcases the lives of black women and how they were oppressed and abused. Alice Walker uses the main character Celie to bring out these issues that affected the black women at that time in the rural society. The main themes which can be seen in the novel are sexism, feminism, and racism. The black man dominated over the black woman to the extent of beating them senselessly and making them slaves in their own homes as portrayed by Celie in the book. The author, Alice Walker, shows how the life of the poor African-American woman was despised and how the domineering African-American man made the African-American woman not live as free as she was supposed to. The two main issues of sexism and racism as depicted in The Color Purple may still be affecting some women from different cultures to this day……………………………………
