church services: You will be conducting a short ethnographic observation project over the next few weeks

You will be conducting a short ethnographic observation project over the next few weeks.  This project will give you experience in both observation and writing detailed, descriptive field notes. It will culminate in a short paper that is due, along with your field notes, by March 5th.  For this project, you will need to observe and take field notes of a social situation for one hour; this should include TWO 30 min. sessions on DIFFERENT days. You will also need to choose a place, or site, to conduct the observation. The site you choose should be unfamiliar to you in order for you to be able to describe it and observe what is going on with “fresh eyes” (i.e., NOT on the CSUN campus). Choose a site that has enough social activity going on to observe; you should focus on human behavior. If your site is large, focus on one area of it. Also, choose a site where you can write short notes relatively undisturbed (you will also be writing more extensive notes immediately afterward). Do NOT choose a site where there are predominately children under 18 (e.g., a school). You must use the same site for each observation session (i.e., you cannot choose two different sites). Examples of types of sites:  Hospital/doctor’s office (e.g., waiting room or cafeteria)   Supermarket (e.g., checkout counter)   Business (e.g., retail store, manufacturer, or office)   Park   Church service/event     Instructions for taking field notes:

  • You should provide a description of your site in your field notes. Where are you? What does it look like? What is the weather like (especially if you are outside)? • You should describe what people are doing at your site. Who are they (e.g., age and gender)? What are they doing? How are they interacting with each other (if they are interacting with each other)? • Only describe what is going on at your site. Do NOT make judgments. • You should NOT be interacting with people during this observation project; it is not participant observation. It is also not an interview project. • Make sure that you balance observation with writing field notes; you do not want to miss what is going on. • Immediately after your observation, you are going to need to spend additional time writing more extensive field notes based on what you observed that you did not have time to write while you were conducting your observation. (~2 pages single^ spaced) • You MUST type up your field notes.• don’t forget to record the date and time of your observations.   Next, you will read through your field notes from the two observation sessions and see if you notice any patterns in the behavior that you observed and recorded. Then you will summarize and analyze your findings in a 2^page paper.    Instructions for your paper:  • Introduce your observation by briefly introducing the site and explaining why you chose the site and what you did at the site while conducting your observation. (~1 paragraph) • Summarize what you observed people doing. (~half a page) • Discuss in more detail a particular incident in order to give a specific example of what you observed. (~1 paragraph) • Conclude your paper by explaining any patterns of behavior you observed (e.g., was there something that several people at this site were doing?). This is the small amount of analysis required for this paper. However, this is an observation exercise  (i.e., demonstrating how well you can observe) so do not feel as though you need to make a startling revelation in your paper. (~1 paragraph) • Proofread your paper (and also ask someone else to do this for you) to find any misspellings, awkward sentences, etc. Your project (paper and field notes) is due March 5th. It is worth 50 points (25 points for your paper and 25 points for your field notes).  You must also submit the project as one document to Tunitin via Moodle (software that checks for plagiarism). I will NOT accept e-mailed projects. If your project is late, I will deduct 5 points from the project grade each day it is late. Project formatting instructions:  • 1^inch margins  • Page numbers in the lower right corner (starting with first page)  • Times New Roman font  • Font size 12  • Double-spaced body text (single-spaced field notes, though)  • Name and other details (course number, date, and assignment name) single-spaced  on the upper left corner of the first page • No unnecessary hard returns (only one after your name and other details and before  your paper text) • No cover pages • Field notes should come after the paper (save as one document)

I decided to choose a church as my observation site, as it is considered to be a holy place among people practicing Christianity. Sunday is believed to be a day of worship, as it is considered to be the Sabbath day. This is because it is the seventh day of the week, and it I supposed to be arresting day. However, Christians use to worship God, and they do so in churches. Therefore, I decided to attend the Catholic Church service that is in our local area in order to observe the behaviors of Christians while worshipping. While making……………………..
