I’m inclined to agree with you and Melissa regarding your observations of the CEO. Looks like we sensed her initial perfunctory support….almost a reluctance to become involved. As you and Melissa have pointed out, she did nothing to prepare all the managers for change or even appear to support the changes. Being ’empowered’ with a task is always difficult if you do not have authority over everyone involved and also do not have clear ‘backing’ from the ultimate boss. Eventually her support was there but only after Richard presented his plan, set up the Steering Committee and asked her to attend the meetings.
Class, do you think Richard could have succeeded on his second attempt without the CEO in those meetings? How important was her emphasize on the importance of those cross-functional teams and her help to resolve disagreements among the functional managers?
