Skills Lab Intensive Preparation Checklist

To prepare for the intensive portion of Skills Lab that occurs next week, be sure to complete or answer the following. Some apply to the in-person Skills Lab intensive, some to virtual, and some apply to either way of engaging with the experience.

•       Save the Student Skills Inventory to your computer.

•       Print the Student Skills Inventory.

•       Download each day’s ZIP file from Week 4.

•       Unzip the files, and then print the files.

•       Confirm that your computer is ready for regular use in a variety of settings. Is your ability to connect to the internet reliable? Is your power source functioning and available?

•       Do you have professional dress ready for all days?

•       Is your virtual workspace camera ready?

•       Do you have headphones and a microphone?

•       Are you able to focus on just the one task of virtual Skills Lab Intensive?

•       Have you prepared your family, work, and other important people in your community for your absence and limited availability? (Tip: This applies to in-person or virtual Skills Lab Instensive.)

•       Have you confirmed your travel plans if you are attending a face-to-face Skills Lab Intensive/Residency?

•       Do you have your Student Skills Inventory and other materials printed and saved electronically?

Week 3: Preparation for Skills Lab Intensive
This week, you prepare for the Skills Lab Intensive that occurs next week. In this engaging event, you put the “skills” in Skills Lab. You demonstrate your social work skills through role-play, group activities, and interaction with your peers and Instructors.

The intensive portion of the course will be unlike your typical online learning experiences. It will be in-person if you are traveling to a site, or it will be a synchronous video-based experience if you are participating in the virtual version. No matter how you attend, you should arrive fully prepared to be present, to engage, and to participate. If that sounds intimidating, consider that these are also hallmarks of being a social worker—hallmarks that you have already been working toward.
This week’s activities focus on preparing for the intensive portion of the Social Work Skills Lab next week.

Discussion: Readiness for Skills Lab Intensive
Uncertainty about the intensive portion of Skills Lab next week could cause nervousness, anxiety, or maybe even fear. These feelings are nothing unusual when embarking on important phases in your educational experience. One way to turn uncertainty into excitement is to be better informed about what is to come.

There a few ways you can look ahead and look forward to next week. First, review next week’s resources and materials and download those you need. Then, use the checklist in the Learning Resources to get a better sense of how prepared you are and adjust accordingly. Finally, in this Discussion, you will engage with your colleagues about preparation, goals, and questions related to next week’s Skills Lab Intensive.
