Termination is the last phase of the plan change process where the client’s services with the social worker have ended

Ewane, Joan.

Termination is the last phase of the plan change process where the client’s services with the social worker have ended. Termination of services to clients can occur in many ways it can be planned, voluntarily, or involuntarily. The clients may decide to terminate their services early enough because of many reasons. Also, the social worker can decide to terminate services with a client if the client is not responsive to treatment for example the client does not respond to therapy sessions either in-person or phone calls for months and they don’t know where to locate the client. Also, if the client is a threat to the community and to the social worker and the client is taken to an in-patient rehab center for months or years. When the social worker decides to stop his or her services with the agency. However, according to Garthwait, the ideal way for the termination will have been anticipated and structured in a positive way (2017).

I have not addressed the termination process in my field education experience. It is important to create a plan for termination and a general timeline of when it may occur (Garthwait, 2017). I have been doing individual therapy in my field of education. The period of my field experience will soon end before the termination of the client’s services from the agency. What I did before working with my assigned clients was to let them know my status as an intern student who has a few months to work with them. The practice of social work is about the process of planned change including termination (Garthwait, 2017). I have notified my supervisor when my internship ends to discuss the process with him. However, I am currently preparing my client’s minds to let them know I have a few weeks to provide services to them as regards my school program. I feel that informing clients earlier will make termination a smooth transition. As my time is drawing closer, I will transition them back to my supervisor for continuous delivery of services. However, Therapeutic relationships can be difficult to end, especially when working with individuals in their time of crisis, it can be a challenging thing to disengage them but notwithstanding as a student intern I must stop because my program has ended.

I began discussing termination with my agency and clients in the beginning of my internship. I took this step as in my experience with clients I want to assure that my rapport with them is not jepordized by leaving abruptly. Clients develop reltaionships with the interns during this time. I have learned that younger clients have even developed a depency on me as a intern. I went about this by letting the parents and the client know the date that i would no longer be available. I even remind them after every session so that the client is not surprised or disapointed when this takes place. Leaving abruptly can in some cases hinder the progress of clients and this is my reason for making them aware.

I would address termination in my field education experience by preparing my clients on my caseload by informing them about the topic of termination and letting them know a few weeks in advance. I would discuss how our time together is coming to an end and formulate a transition plan for another social worker to take over their case. I would prepare my clients by linking them to other services they may need in my absence. I would provide them with wrap-around services and referrals seeing how social work is one of many helping professions to address needs of clients (Garthwait, 2017). I am there to help them reach their fullest potential. While working with my clients, I would assist them with anything that I can within that time frame. I would also let them know it is nothing personal why I am terminating to prevent them from feeling like I do not want to help them.
